This week you should mostly be listening to…

Dananananaykroyd

That’s Danan-anan-aykroyd. Easy! Well actually it wasn’t and it took me a while to get it. Finally I had to Google. Anyway, with the formalities now over, let’s continue. I first heard the Glasweigan 6 piece on Radio 1’s best of unsigned and took a liking to them straight away. Moshi Moshi Records also took a liking and placed the band’s fight pop style (that’s the band’s description) in the well placed company of other Moshi Moshi siblings such as Hot Chip, Architecture In Helsinki and The Rakes. It’s still early days for Dananananaykroyd but hopefully things will keep going their way.

Seven Swans Reissue

My favourite Sufjan Stevens album, 2004’s mesmerizing 7 Swans, has been reissued by the lovely people at Sounds Familyre. Pressed on 140g vinyl, the reissue also comes packaged with a bonus 7″ containing to unreleased tracks from the 7 Swans sessions. This is a must for any Sufjan fan and the special 7″ is sure to become a collectors item. The gorilla vs bear boys have kindly put up one of the 7″ tracks for your listening pleasure and you can read more about the reissue here.

MTV-lite

So it turns out my cousin is in the video for the Delorentos song, Eustace Street. So I figure I might as well bask in his new found fame and put his appearance alongside a couple of other videos from the current cream of Irish music talent.

Warm & Scratchy

For those who don’t know, Adult Swim is a simple concept. Cartoon and animated entertainment for adults and geeks alike…Nickelodeon for the over 15’s. It is responsible for putting out cult shows like Robot Chicken, Cowboy Bebop, Family Guy, Ghost In A Shell and Aqua Teen Hunger Force (one of my favourites which gets the feature film treatment this year) and has created a distinct image akin to early MTV years. They also like to throw out free music from time to time. The current compilation, Warm & Scratchy, is available for download and contains tracks from the likes of TV On The Radio, The Rapture and Liars. It’s a great listen with some cool artwork to add to your iTunes if your that way inclined.. Download that and previous release Chocolate Swim EP and your sure to be the coolest kid on the block.

DATAROCK

Well new Datarock that is. We all feel in love with the trackie clad Norwegians with the release of their self-titled 2007 album Datarock (it madeNo.36 in NME’s albums of 2007 and finally gets a US release this June). Fredrik Sareoa and Ket-ill recently debuted new EP ‘See What I Care’ in their homeland and it’s going down a treat. Being released through Young Aspiring Professionals, the EP contains brilliant new track ‘Not Me’. It’s got a killer beat which demands to played loud loud loud. I’ll be shouting the chorus through out the summer. The duo will play a DJ set as part of this years Oxegen festival and is not to be missed. If you haven’t heard the album Datarock (and why the hell not) you can listen here.

Topman Unsigned

As Phantom listeners and subscribers to the Topman newsletter (that’s right, I’m on that list) the Topman Unsigned Band Search is coming to a close this Tuesday 21st 22nd at a special bash at Topman’s new flagship Dublin store on Grafton St. The submission process was opened a month ago and has been whittled down to four bands:

Dirty Epics
Fight Like Apes
Heritage Centre
Straglers

This is were YOU come in. Thats right YOU (with capitals). Vote for your favourite and the band with the most votes get a support a the Topman launch party. Now while Fight Like Apes will probably take this in a landslide, I’d like a moment of your time to recommend Dirty Epics.

I recently saw the Dublin four piece live and it was…well…simply put it was alot of fun. Blondie-esque at first meeting theres more to Dirty Epics if you scratch below the surface. Their debut single ‘Demolition Man‘ was released April 14th and is a nice track that showcases the bands talent. Check their myspace for a listen and tot along to the next gig. It’ll be money well spent.

Bling Ba Da Bling

Speaking of The Maccabees…they quite like this new fashion label. Enfant Terrible is dresses, hoodies and bling for everyone. The first collection is now available to buy online and falls very much into the bling category of this new range from Irish designer Ladey Jadey. If you move your eyeballs a little to the left you’ll see Niamh Ham Sandwich sporting some Enfant Terrible accessories. You can see more yummy pics like that by clicking this. The great news is that pieces from the current collection are selling out fast (including my favourite piece) and next month sees the release of new collections and a limited run of silkscreened tees. The summer sees the release of a hoody collection with guest designer Try-Sarah-Tops, which I’m really looking forward too. All in all an exciting new fashion label with designs that include dinosaurs and shiny bits. What more could one want?
