It’s Time I Got To Know You Now - The Ones & The Twos

Today is Friday.

If you do one thing today, go and marvel at The LK (AKA Lovekevins), as part of the HWCH festival in the Pod complex, Harcourt Street. They take over the Crawdaddy Stage at 20.40 and you would be rather simple to miss it. Seriously, I saw the band three times last year and they’re most definitely a central attraction at this weekend’s tomfoolery.

They’re Swedish for Christ’s sake.

And song lyrics include “Panda Bear”, “Tandem Bikes”, “The Fall” and “Fuck all”. AND they wear spectacles with panache. What’s not to love?

I like the LK

I dislike anything else that’s on at the same time as them. Purely by default.

Forget All Your Troubles, Forget All Your Cares

My Saturday recommendation is to listen to the following songs in this highly specific, technical, methodological sequence. Brace yourselves.

First: “Down Boy” from the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s new E.P., “Is Is”.

Second: “Downtown” by Petula Clarke (do not mix this up with the Peaches’ song…or…do…)

Third: See First above.

Never one to in any way brand laziness as impertinence, I’m very excited about “Is Is”. However, it does beg the question whether the cool ones (™) are outstaying their welcome on the cushy laurels that their mere two album offering has proffered them. Great and all as their contribution to the Spiderman 3 soundtrack was (cf: “Sealings”), the song was over 4 years old and got sluggishly, albeit profitably, branded as “exclusive”. Yet credit where credit is due - Nick Zinner is doing his snappy snappy thing with admirable gusto (“Bones and All” and “I Hope You Are All Happy Now” – which I had the pleasure of oogling in Paris last summer), Brian Chase is presumably simmering effortless cool in some watering hole on the East Side and Karen O – well don’t get me started on what She may or may not be up to…

Tony Wilson RIP

TW

Breaking News… Tony Wilson has passed away at the age of 57. Wilson was the founder of Factory Records and is probably the single most importand figure in the Manchester music scene from the late 70s for atleast 20 years.
24 Hour Party People is probably the best way to get an introduction to what he did although it’s not entirely factual but you’ll see that without him the world wouldn’t have heard of some very important groups, most notably, Joy Division/New Order. He was also the owner of the legendary Hacienda Club. As for the Happy Mondays, never really my cup of tea!
The photo above is when he presented a tv show called So It Goes over 30 years ago.
